Book Describes New Eating Disorder Treatment Options

Dr. Julie O’Toole originally wrote her new book, Give Food a Chance, with doctors and clinicians in mind. Her son was the one who suggested gearing it towards parents instead.

“Give Food a Chance was written as a guide for parents, regardless of whether or not they are involved in a clinical program. It was also written for professionals such as doctors, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, and therapists and contains a wealth of information that concerned parents can pass along to their child’s providers.” [Source: SANE PR]

What makes Dr. O’Toole’s book unique is that her approach to treating eating disorders is based in her belief that the disorders are NOT caused by poor parenting, pressure from the media or fashion industry, or issues of control. Instead, she believes they are caused by a chronic brain disorder. This changes her approach from one of treating the underlying condition to simply teaching her patients how to eat healthfully.

I disagree with the idea that eating disorders are simply a brain malfunction. However, I do appreciate a book that is written with multiple audiences in mind. Some are strictly for sufferers, some for loved ones, and some for professionals. A book that can help more than one audience can be quite helpful.
